The Mestari Control is the newest silhouette in the KARHU collection and our latest model to feature a robust, slip-resistant outsole. Inspired by several prototypes from KARHU’s back catalogues, the Mestari Control utilizes a novel traction pattern found on an early 80s version of the Albatross. Our design team has reimagined this unique outsole to create a sturdier version of the Mestari with more grip for day-to-day use. Additionally, the upper of the Mestari Control features detailed tooling inspired by an older silhouette, the KARHU Balance. KARHU, meaning “bear” in Finnish, is a leading running brand, and has provided technical running and outdoor gear for 100 years. With an authentic heritage in athletics and a deep connection to the outdoors, KARHU follows the Finnish principles of design simplicity and running purity.

Karhu means “bear” in Finnish. The label used to be one of the best kept secrets among in athletic circles, but we think you’ll be happy we let the fashion cat out of the bag. The first pair of shoes were made for athletes Hannes Kolehmainen and Vielle Ritola aka The Flying Finns, in 1916. It’s widely held that Kolehmaine and Ritola’s superior footwear arguably had an influence in helping them scoop gold medals all over the globe.
