Spotlight on Haeckels

Get to know Margate-based skincare specialists Haeckels, the brand using ingredients from the sea to create natural formulas that are as good for your skin as they are for the planet.

Pioneering natural skincare and fragrance for over the last ten years, Haeckels was founded in 2012 in the British seaside town of Margate. Dom Bridges, voluntary beach warden and coastal enthusiast, founded the brand after years of being disillusioned with larger skincare companies’ lack of ethical credentials and complicated ingredients lists.

In the early days of Haeckels, Dom would collect natural botanicals such as algae, bladderwrack and seaweed from his local beach and experiment with different formulas from his kitchen. Soon enough, the brand was operating from a lab nearby with a workforce of biodesigners and other skincare specialists.

With a range of hand soaps, body washes, serums, beard oils as well as incense, candles and fragrance, the brand’s products all start with a base of seaweed, known for its anti-bacterial and hydrating properties. One of Haeckels’ bestsellers is the Algae Plump Serum which combines hyaluronic acid with marine-derived polysaccharides to firm and plump the skin while adding moisture.

With B-Corporation status, the company uses renewable energy to make its products as well as using recycled materials for packaging, hand harvesting seaweed and ensures that all products are completely vegan.

At the heart of the business, beach conservation is a high priority. In addition to the products themselves providing education on Margate’s coastline through transparent ingredient lists and a hand crafted approach to design and packaging, the company advocates and partakes in regular beach cleans to remove waste from the coastline.
