In the mid-1940s experimentslived the designer Alexander Girard witha series of abstract glass sculpturesfoam rubber corrugated board driftwoodplywood and solid wood including abird figure made by hand from apple woodhas been cut. These sculptures were made in July1945 presented in Americanmagazine Arts & Architecture. Today the original woodenbird preserved by the Vitra Design Museum as part of the Girard-archive. In close collaboration with thefamily Girard Vitra has this figure againbrought to life: although the bird characteristicsare kept to a minimum isn't it the silhouette of the Girard Bird clearrecognizable. The archaic lookingfigure made of solid maple woodfrom France can stand on its legs or tailto stand.Together with his colleagues Charles and RayEames and George Nelson was AlexanderGirard one of the leadingfigures of post-war Americandesign. Girard mainly focused ontextile design but it also becomesrenowned for his graphic work and hisfurniture exhibition and interior designthrow. Material: solid maple wood (France).
