Vitra The Chair Collection Poster
The Akari Light Sculptures (1951) by Isamu Noguchi are a series of lamps made by Japanese artisans using traditional washi paper. "The harshness of electric light is transformed, thanks to the magic of paper, into the light of our origins: the sun." (Noguchi)
This lamp comes folded in a 60 x 60 x 5 cm exclusive Vitra gift box.
Each Akari Light Sculpture is meticulously crafted by hand at the Ozeki Workshop, a traditional family business based in Gifu, Japan.
In 1951, the American-Japanese artist and designer Isamu Noguchi began designing the Akari Light Sculptures: more than a hundred models made by hand, in rice paper, as table, floor or ceiling lamps. For these chosen objects the name "akari", which means "light" and "light" in Japanese, to denote both illumination and lightness.
The work of Japanese-American artist and designer Isamu Noguchi is extraordinarily multifaceted, ranging from fine art to industrial design. Since 2002, Vitra has republished several of its designs in collaboration with the Isamu Noguchi Foundation in New York.
With an ethos rooted in the belief that thoughts and feelings can be positively influenced by the good design around us, Vitra collaborates with designers and architects from all over the world to create life-improving homeware and furniture. Today, Vitra comprises an educational campus and a design museum, with recent developments putting the focus on the sustainable future of their iconic pieces ranging from chairs to clocks.
