Grayson Perry: The Pre-Therapy Years
The Holbourne Museum in Bath is hosting an exhibition this Winter and Spring devoted to the early work of Grayson Perry. Of course, intimately tied up with the early work is the early life, and in Perry's case the early life of a transvestite and his alter ego Claire. This early iteration of Claire is not the cartoon Claire that Grayson now inhabits from time to time, there is something suburban to her, while Grayson's life at the time was tied up with 80s London and the cast of characters that inhabited nightclubs and art colleges at the time.
Perry writes his own essay in this book Climbing Everest Without Oxygen but there are also essays by Andrew Wilson and Catrin Jones. The whole thing is both a great document of the early artistic life of Perry and also an insight into the later character and work.
