The English Country House: From the Archives of Country Life - Mary Miers
The eyes of Country Life do of course, give a fairly restricted view of the English country house - this no warts and all exposé of privilege - but it does give a glimpse of some stunning houses and the stories behind them. The book contains images drawn from the extensive photographic library of the weekly magazine; a magazine that is part property lust list, part scholarly writing art and nature and part ubiquitous showroom space for the lives of those that inhabit the houses.
This book features 62 houses spanning the architectural styles of seven centuries from Stokesay Castle, just north of Ludlow, to the newly built, Lutyens-inspired, Corfe Farm. Punctuating the book are six essays by leading architectural historians that set the English country house into its context and chart the changing tastes and uses for these houses.
