Damascus Tiles - Arthur Millner
This first title by Arthur Millner is soon to be joined by a sister title on Indian Tiles - due to be published in October 2021.
In this book he presents a comprehensive re-evaluation of Syrian architectural ceramics and reveals what is unique and distinctive about ceramics produced in Damascus and its environs. He traces their development from their early beginnings, drawing on influences from as far away as China, through the fertile Mamluk and Ottomoan periods right up to their discovery by Western travellers and their subsequent influence on late-nineteenth-centuyry art and design.
The beautiful and intricate patterns of these tiles were made by skilled craftsmen over many centuries.
The book is lavishly illustrated including images of some tiles in-situ in locations in Syria which have now sadly been lost.
