About Time - David Rooney
On the back cover blurb for this book Dava Sobel, author of Longitude, writes 'In this information-packed swoop through history and into the future, he exposes time's many identities along with the hidden agendas of clocks. Time in knowledge. Time is power. Time is faith. Time is destiny.'
The twelve clocks that feature in the book are arranged chronologically. The book starts with a sundial at the Forum in Rome and ends with a plutonium timekeeper that was buried in Osaka in 1970 and which has a lifespan of 5000 years and is due to be unearthed in 6970. Rooney is the son of a prominent clockmaker and is the former curator of timekeeping at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich. Via the twelve clocks in his book he tells the story of timekeeping and how it continues to shape our modern world.
