Since joining Oiva Toikka's family of glass birds for Finnish glassworks Iittala in 2004, the Owlet with its charming rounded shape, yellow and white featherwork and large blue eyes has become a firm favourite of many.
Born from a happy marriage between highly skilled craftsmen at the Iittala glassworks in Finland and the creative vision of artist and designer Oiva Toikka, the Toikka birds first came to life in 1972 and have since become admired and collected by glass lovers the world over. Over the course of four decades, the prolific Toikka has designed upwards of 500 glass birds which have been hand crafted by Iittala. With a streamlined interpretation of the shape and movement of the birds, the artist collaborates closely with traditional glass makers to add bold colour and vital form to the pieces and somehow to capture the nature and character of the creatures with striking, captivating results. Every one of Toikka’s sleek glass birds is unique, and is not just an individual work of art, but is also a highly prized outcome of the respected Finnish glass blowing tradition.
