About
The Musa 'Dwarf Cavendish' is a variety of Banana plant best suited to being grown indoors. In infancy you will find a beautiful, dark purple, mottling on the large, paddle shaped foliage. This will disappear in maturity as the leaves turn a rich green and grow to an impressive size.
Light: Bright but indirect
They prefer a spot with bright but indirect light, but will tolerate a few hours of direct sun if in the morning or late afternoon.
Watering: Moderate
In the warmer months, water when the top two inches of soil have dried, leaving until at least half the pot of soil is dry over autumn and winter. The easiest way to check the moisture levels is by sticking your finger into the soil to the required depth.
Humidity: High
High humidity levels are preferred - if conditions are too dry you will likely see splitting of the leaves and crisping around the leaf edge (although the former is common in this type of plant and should be considered part of its natural charm). To increase moisture levels you can place a dish filled with stones and topped up with water beside the plant - this will slowly release moisture throughout the day. Household electric diffusers will also help, and regular daily misting.
Note:
Musa are a fast growing houseplant and can eventually reach heights of up to 3m. Growth will be even faster if you feed during spring and summer. It's also worth noting that the leaves are fragile and will easily mark and tear so avoid placing in a spot where it will see regular disturbance. It is also common for the large leaves (particularly in maturity) to bend and snap under their own weight - this is normal and they will quickly be replaced by new leaves.
