Song & Self - Ian Bostridge
Bostridge is one of the foremost tenor singers; he is regarded as one of the greatest Lieder singers. His recording of Schubert's Lieders is particularly lovely. He has made numerous award-winning recordings and gives recitals through Europe, North America and the Far East.
This book is a collection of writings that he put together when he was unable to take part in live music owing to the pandemic and ensuiuing restrictions. The enforced silence allowed Bostridge to explore the backstories of some of the many works that he has performed - such as Schumann's song cycle Frauen und Leben and Benjamin Britten's music.
The essays are based on lectures that Bostridge gave at the University of Chicago in 2021 in which he guides us on a fascinating journey beneath the surface of these works. He discusses what a performer's own identity can bring to, or subtract from, the identities inherent in the works themselves.
