DESCRIPTION:
This Japanese woodblock print was made by Utagawa Hiroshige. It belongs to his renowned One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (Tokyo) series.
The series showed the sights of Edo through the changing seasons.
This particular print, the No. 44 showcases a hot summer day by the famous clothing store Shirokiya in the busy Nihonbashi district. In the middle of the print, we can see a group of Sumiyoshi dancers under an extraordinary 2 tiered umbrella. These performers, women originally from Sumiyoshi Shrine, near Osaka, sang songs and played the lute and were always escorted by their fathers or husbands.
