These masks are hand carved by Abdulai in Ghana. Abdulai is part of a Ghanaian carving group, which helps to empower artisans in Ghana through fair-trade crafts.

The wood used is known as False Rubber Tree. (Holarrhena Floribunda). The carvers buy it as waste from the local sawmill in Accra who use the wood for general construction and furniture.

The offcuts which may have been used for firewood or discarded is bought by the artisans. It is native to West and Central Africa from Senegal to Angola. it is a soft wood and fast growing.
