AW23 Fashion Trends to Know

Last updated September 8

Date created October 13

Give your wardrobe a new lease of life with and injection of independent design. From sustainable brands, to those putting our personality front and centre, here are 10 independent fashion brands we're loving right now.

We can’t deny that we’re looking forward to the comfort and creativity that autumn layering brings. We’re already dreaming of statement signature knits from Ganni or Stine Goya thrown over maximalist printed midi dresses from masters Baum und Pferdgarten and Maison Hotel as firm wardrobe staples. This season however, brands have thrown a few extra expertly-curated trends into the mix to boost our moods and daily ‘fits. Looking at the AW23 catwalks and our independent boutiques’ curations, we’ve chosen 4 key autumn fashion trends we’re bookmarking for fall. Wishlists at the ready.

1. Soft Focus

Things get a little fuzzy when it comes to prints this autumn, as digitally-powered colour bombs frequent knits, polo necks, coats and more. A little soft around the edges but bursting with energy, this blurred-lines style print is more versatile than you think. A great way to add a burst of colour to minimalist wardrobes, look no further than to Second Female and Thinking Mu for simple layering techniques that will see you through to party season. All-out print more your speed? Go big and bold with the outerwear and matching sets from Essentiel Antwerp. This is dopamine dressing gone digital.

2. The New Bohemian

Boho is back in full force, and this season it’s taking on a traditional Celtic twist mixed with a whole heap of nostalgia. Grounded in its psychedelic rock roots we know and love, we see it championing analogue production, traditional quilt making and arran and fair-isle knitting techniques as brands like Louise Misha, Meadows and YMC take their lead from the Scots this season. We particularly love Leon & Harper’s knit vests, and patchwork quilted jackets that will easily see you into spring too. Throw in a floral, balloon-sleeved midi-dress (look to Maison Hotel for some great options) and you have yourself a look Stevie or Janis would be proud of.

3. Good Foundations

Rest easy this autumn with the rise of Quiet Luxury. It’s no secret that minimalism isn’t going anywhere fast so now’s the time to stock up on the basics. Build good foundations to your wardrobe by starting with classics - the perfect white shirt, the staple black overcoat, the pristine tailored trouser. The shirt and tie combo even took centre stage at Dior and Alexander McQueen but in a less corporate, more casual way. If unsure where to start on Trouva, we suggest heading to Danish brand Stella Nova who have approached tailoring and basics in an effortlessly cool way. Scandi girls approve.

4. Go West

We’re heading to the rodeo this autumn, thanks to the western-inspired trend that has been gaining momentum over the past few seasons. John Wayne eat your heart out, this isn’t a trend for the minimalists. Expect denim, and lots of it, fringing, embroidery and more. We say wear the boots in mixed-metallics from DWRS, match it with a Canadian tuxedo (Ganni’s maxi denim dress is the perfect place to start) and top it all off with a classic cowboy hat to boot. Everyone will firmly know this isn’t your first rodeo.
