Product details

Okiagari-koboshi literally means little priest standing up. This is a traditional Japanese tumbler made of papier-mâché and designed in such a way that it always returns to an upright position when tilted to the side. It symbolizes perseverance and resistance in the face of adversity, echoing the Japanese proverb: “Seven times down, eight times up.” Tradition dictates that one buys a tumbler for each member of the family plus one, in the hope that the family will grow over the year. Find the different Okiagari tumblers. Kaguyahime is one of the characters in the Japanese tale The Bamboo Cutter written in the 10th century. Once upon a time there was an elderly couple who could no longer have children. One day, while cutting bamboo stalks, the old gentleman discovered a pretty baby inside a branch. With his wife, they named her Kaguyahime, or Princess Moonlight, because of her origin. From then on, every time he cut bamboo, the old man found gold inside, which is why he soon became immensely rich. Kaguyahime is a symbol of beauty, intelligence and kindness.
