Pantone Colour of the Year 2018: Ultra Violet

Though you may be feeling the winter blues or getting rosy red sitting by the fire, Pantone have gazed into the future of colour, and it’s looking…purple.

Their 2018 shade of the year, Ultra Violet, “communicates originality, ingenuity and visionary thinking,” explains Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. It is a colour that, throughout history, has been donned by artists (including Wagner and “Purple Rain” visionary Prince), dignitaries, and royalty. It is also a colour associated with clarity of vision, creativity, and a deep sense of harmony.

Indeed, this shade is harmonious by nature, formed of two opposing hues brought together in one rich colour. “We wanted to pick something that brings hope and an uplifting message,” Eiseman said. “It’s truly a reflection of what’s needed in our world today.” With the world in a state of disarray, it’s a colour that can calm and rejuvenate.

Trouva’s Creative Director Lucy Ward thinks that this shade is the perfect way to bring some optimism into your life in 2018. “Perk up neutral spaces by introducing decorative accents, such as a trio of glass vases, onto mantelpieces, shelves or coffee tables,” she says. Though the bold Ultra Violet may seem like a daunting colour to invite into your home, it can in fact provide a subtly uplifting effect that will give your room a revitalising boost.
