The Mezzadro stool is a design classic by the two brothers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni.
As early as 1957, they presented the world with the first prototype of their stool, which has been manufactured by Zanotta since 1970 .
The seat of this extraordinary cantilever chair is a simple tractor seat that the designers placed on a curved steel structure with a wing screw. A wooden base acts as a further support for the construction.
Each of the parts has a supporting function and nothing about Mezzadro is superfluous. At the same time, the design of the stool is outstanding and innovative and even spans an arc to artistic sculpture.
Mezzadro, together with the Sella stool, for whose seat the Castiglioni brothers converted a bicycle saddle, is probably the most extreme design of the creative team. It is the perfect and imaginative symbiosis of form and function and is considered an exemplary example of so-called radical design, a movement in Italian design that emerged from the doctrine of functionalism and the doctrine of functionalism in the 60s and 70s of the 20th century Taste - embodied in Italy by the Bel Design - renounced.
