Nature's Palette - Patrick Baty
Patrick Baty's previous book, The Anatomy of Colour, was published by Thames & Hudson in 2017 and was the history of paint colours and pigments. His expertise in colour stems from his work as a renowned historical paint expert.
This book takes the 200th anniversary of Werner's Nomenclature of Colour as its starting point and filly illustrates it with nineteenth-century depictions of the referenced species. If you've ever wondered about Gamboge Yellow, Dutch Orange or Tile Red this book reveals how those colours are made up - tile red is 'hyacinth red mixed with much greyish white, and a small portion of scarlet red'.
In his introduction Baty reveals the development of colour classification and the construction of a set of standardized colour terms for scientific descriptions. The book is a beauty.
