Product Details

This beautiful first edition hardcover book from Taschen features over 300 of rarely seen renderings by the iconic pop artist, Andy Warhol. For an artist known for his loud, vivid screen- prints, there’s something surprising about the tenderness and delicacy of Andy Warhol’s line drawings, gathered together here for the first time. The book looks in particular at his images of male subjects, which are often sexually charged. The drawings evoke the sketches of Jean Cocteau and even Matisse: highly distilled and sure of line, yet loose. The sly voyeurism, meanwhile, is entirely Warhol’s own, and even the most risqué drawings contain a kind of droll humor—a sense of ironic detachment—that would become a Warhol trademark. The works are punctuated with poems by James Baldwin, Thom Gunn and Allen Ginsberg, giving a gentle, introspective atmosphere.
