Shop Small Saturday: Albion Stores

Join us as we take a virtual trip to the sunny Margate harbour and chat to Katie, owner of independent fashion boutique Albion Stores.

Nestled along the Margate coast is independent fashion boutique Albion Stores, set up by Katie and her husband Joe in 2018 after a relocation from London. Together they brought their lifelong dream of owning a shop to life.

“Our aim is to bring to our customers a little extra everyday” says Katie, “so we look for brands and products that bring a little something more. This could be another level of detailing, or the effort to be consciously kind to the environment, or a level of joy by design.”

Stocking cult favourite indie brands such as LF Markey, Nigel Cabourn, Seventy + Mochi and Hikerdelic, Albion Stores curates a mix of contemporary mens and womenswear that is set to inject a little joy to your wardrobe refresh this season.

Read on as we chat to Katie about all things independent British fashion, her background in music and the shop cats, Minnie and Otis.

“Margate is a very creative town, home to many artists, musicians, designers and makers, and we absolutely love living here. Our store is filled with beautiful and creative things, just like Margate’s residents.

We have a very social atmosphere in the shop. People often pop by to chat, hang out, and see our cats - Minnie and Otis - Minnie absolutely loves flirting with customers.”

“We are in the Old Town, at the end towards the harbour, over the road from the Turner Contemporary and amongst some great neighbours such as the Fort Road Hotel, Papillon Interiors which sells gorgeous homewares, and a wonderful seaside accessories boutique called Harbour & Tide.”

“We originally launched stocking only British brands, and our name and brand curation was about showcasing British talent. We want to embody the spirit of our original brand strategy, and focus on brands that represent British eccentricity and flair, and focus our attention on the British brands we love.”

“We love music. It’s such an important part of our identity and in-store experience - our customers often say they discover new music from being in our store.

I’ve been DJing for a long time, too. It’s something that’s gotten me around the world, playing at festivals, and at some of my favourite clubs and parties. I’m way more of a home body these days, but I still promote a party with my husband Joe in Margate, and I present a couple of monthly radio shows for local stations.”

"We close up at 6 ready again to do it all again on Sunday. Once we shut up, Joe and I will often head out to meet friends at our favourite local bar, if we’re not DJing. And often end up coming home around 10 for a little party for two in our record room in the basement where we live.”
