was 2015 and we were working together on our first period product startup, Sanitary Owl. One morning we were sat on the floor of Alec’s flat frantically packing our boxes ready for delivery when it struck us: we were drowning in a sea of plastic. The products we were delivering to customers were wrapped in plastic, nestled in plastic applicators, with chemical dye coloured strings dangling from them — even the absorbent parts which you’d assume were made from natural fibres, were laced with plastic. We’d sleepwalked into a toxic industry. Plastic waste, synthetic ingredients and negative language — the more we looked into it, the more compelled we became to change things.
